Common questions about Recreational Vehicle Insurance

Get quick answers to some of the most asked questions about recreational vehicle insurance. If you have additional questions, please contact us.

My motorcycle has customized parts added to it. Are they covered by my policy?

If custom parts of been added to your snowmobile, boat, collector car, motorcycle, etc., be mindful that aftermarket personalization will not be covered by the average policy. Your insurance agent will determine if coverage for custom equipment and parts is necessary.

If a friend borrows my ATV, will they receive coverage under my personal insurance policy?

The answer is contingent on who your carrier is. If your claim is basic, and you state that your friend rode your vehicle with permission, then basic claims might be covered, likely under recreational insurance. However, if a claim were to get more complicated (i.e., if personal injury or property damage was involved), then the costs of medical bills or property damage fixtures probably won’t receive insurance coverage. Our insurance agents specialize in consulting people about these kinds of scenarios. Their purpose is to assist you so that you can make an informed decision about the insurance choices you make.

I have a collector car. Will a standard car insurance policy cover it?

The average auto policy comes with a number of advantages, as well as its fair share of limitations, as far as collector car insurance goes. Consider the following:

Typically, a collector car can be kept on standard auto policies if:

  • The vehicle has been appraised, and it has been reasonably maintained.
  • The collector car isn’t customized or highly specialized.
  • Your insurance agency has the appraisal and some photos on file.

It may be worth getting another policy for your collector/antique car if:

  • You want either an agreed-upon or guaranteed value for an antique car.
  • The antique car isn’t driven around like a hobby vehicle, and is stored inside a securely locked garage (as opposed to on the driveway).
  • You are looking for an adjuster whose niche is collector/antique cars before you file a claim.
